It was meant to be funny… but did Smith’s humor take it too far?

When waitress Leisa Smith served the former president, she did what any normal young person would do: Excitedly post a social media photo of herself with George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush. But that’s not what sent the Internet into a frenzy.

Smith also dished on details of the generous $40 tip, or nearly 200 percent of the bill, that the 43rd president gave her. But Leisa — who identifies as liberal — also tweeted, “bush did 911 but he did me a solid and left a hella tip.”

The tweet went viral and has since been deleted, and Leisa defended herself, explaining in a note on Twitter: “I don’t believe Bush did 9/11. The tweet was supposed to be a sarcastic joke…President George W. Bush and his wife were some of the nicest people I ever met and had I known this would blow out of proportion I would never have tweeted it.”

Still, Leisa, has not been let off the hook by Tweeps who felt her joke was a tad disrespectful to the former Commander in Chief:
