A fake article in The Daily Californian from March, which only mentions Fieri once and then proceeds to describe a press conference about the cultural inclusivity of certain countries’ flags, nonetheless picked up enough steam on social media that the university had to clear the air.
For a brief moment, the idea of Fieri as speaker seemed quite possible. On Reddit, one commenter linked the rumor to a 2012 announcement from Sodexo that the campus cafeteria supplier had partnered with Fieri for “an ‘off the hook’ culinary experience peppered with a lot of fun.”
“He hasn’t been invited,” campus spokesperson Dan Mogulof wrote in an email to The Daily Californian. “There are no plans to invite him. He won’t be the commencement speaker.”
On Reddit, a representative from the campus office of public affairs did confirm that there was “an ‘ask’ out to someone very cool; that’s the latest.”
