The scene at Chelsea Market at last night’s fifth NYChiliFest 2016 was delicious, chili-driven madness. Hundreds came out to sample some of the best chili NYC has to offer, all while enjoying live music from The Defibulators and select beers on tap, including Samuel Adams’ new Nitro White Ale.
The entire market was closed for the event, creating an 800-foot concourse of chili stations. Guests sampled chilis in their very own NYChilifest 2016 mugs, cleaning out their mugs in between samples at designated stations. For the event, Dickson’s Farmstand Meats supplied all the chefs with 100 percent dry-aged, locally-raised beef from Wrighteous Organics in Schoharie, New York, as the base for their chili. Ticket proceeds for the event will benefit Wellness in the Schools.
A panel of judges tasted the chilis to determine the 2016 Chili Champ of NYC. The panel included Adam Sachs, editor-in-chief of Saveur; Martin Tessarzik, farmer at Wrighteous Organics; and Bill Telepan, Chef at Wellness in the Schools. The panel selected El Vez as the official winner, awarding David LaForce, executive chef at El Vez, and team with the 2016 Golden Chili Mug. El Original Tx Mx was the runner up, and Fletcher’s Brooklyn Barbecue received an honorable mention. The winner as determined by the votes of attendees at the event was Bar Truman.
