$94,000 Bid For McDonald's Secret Sauce Was A Hoax

This bottle of 'liquid gold' turned out to be fool's gold. A bid of £65,900 (about $94,000 USD) for a bottle of McDonald's Big Mac sauce in a charity auction benefitting Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) was indeed too good to be true.

"It really captured the public's imagination and we're hoping to have raised over £65,000 for RMHC," Steve Howells, head of marketing at the McDonald's, told The Independent. There were more than 40 bids for totals exceeding £50,000 (about $72,000 USD) and the company is in the process of contacting runner-up bids to see if any of the offers are sincere.

A spokesman adds, "We've been working with eBay to make sure we're weeding out the fake bids—it's such a shame but we're really confident we've raised a lot of money for RMHC."

The winner of the auction will receive a bottle of Big Mac sauce in a special collector's box with a voucher for a free burger.
