Masa

New York NY 10019
(212) 823-9800
Former New York Times critic Sam Sifton took Masa down to three stars from the four given to it by his predecessor, apparently at least in part because they made him wait outside when he showed up early, didn't explain all the dishes, and didn’t pay him much attention after dessert. That doesn't seem to have discouraged the high-rollers who crowd the sushi bar or (losing some of the immediacy of the experience) sit at one of the small tables. Masa's toro-stuffed maki rolls inspire lip-twitching and eye-rolling, and the toro with beluga caviar seems almost worth the price of admission. And what a price that is: The swanky Time Warner Center setting and elaborate omakase-only menu is accompanied by a high bar for entry. At $450 per person before tip or beverages, you're looking at a bill that can easily total more than $1,200 for two. — Arthur Bovino

Masa Takayama abandoned an adoring Beverly Hills clientele to indoctrinate New Yorkers into the esoteric realm of $400 dinners. See the review of this Japanese/Sushi restaurant at 10 Columbus Cir. in Manhattan.

Sit at the counter of The Master
Minimal decor showcases the bright flavors and impeccable quality of Chef Takayama's sushi offerings. Be warned, the space is small; only 16 seats at tables, plus 10 more at the bar to watch him work.
Surrender your wallet to Bar Masa and order your favorites from the $400 prix-fixe omakase a la carte. Favorites include duck tacos, torchon of Kobe beef with foie gras and scallop-shrimp ceviche.
The 27 course menu is a journey. White truffle sushi will make you cry a little. It's pretty expensive, but worth every penny.

Great watercress salad, lovely sushi. Good service at the bar.
More of a fun FYI than a tip: The surface of the sushi bar itself costs $60,000. Worth attending just to check that out.
This is one of those places that if you can go, GO! Try to get a seat at the bar. WARNING: You will probably never be able to enjoy sushi quite the same way after experiencing Masa!

The only place in NYC where you can order sushi without sitting at the sushi bar.
Try the Hibachi Chicken!
Try the tofu with ginger soy. A good value relative to other menu items and very, very tasty.
You have to try Chirashi.

Chef: Masa Takayama
For a sushi experience unlike any other in New York, chef Masa Takayama offers an exorbitant plethora of Japanese cuisine.
Don't be a curmudgeon and give it a shot. Best sushi ever.
3. SAVE $$. NY's most expensive restaurant has got your back. Dishes like fried blow fish & white truffles are served omakase style, meaning "leave it to the chef." Go big and go broke.
Safe room for the cocoa sesame ice cream or splurge on the truffle version
