Let's All Drink To '90's Teen Rom-Coms!

The year was 1999. Your date wore his best Tommy Hilfiger button-down and picked you up in his mom's champagne-colored Honda Accord. You were inexplicably covered in glitter, your layered bob pinched high in dozens of plastic butterfly barrettes. As you held his sweaty hand in the darkened movie theater, you secretly wished your guy was as fly as Freddie Prinze Junior and you were as rufus as a pre-Charlie's Angels Drew Barrymore.

The late nineties were all about the high school romantic comedy, wherein a slightly arrogant teenage boy falls for a socially awkward yet totally gorgeous outcast and hilarity ensued. It was feel-good cinema at its finest, full of poufy pastel proms and Gabrielle Union's perfect, perfect dimples.

If you're a red-blooded American barely grown-up, you've gotta admit that somewhere in your cynical soul, you still have a soft spot for Joseph Gordon-Levitt in high waisted khakis and that nothing is more perfect than a singing Heath Ledger backed up by a high school marching band on the bleachers of the girls' soccer field.

This year's batch of post-recession teen movies, à la Spring Breakers and The Bling Ring, have gotten all after-school-special serious on us. (Do you know where your children are? Because they're probably touching James Franco's dreadlocks or stealing from Paris Hilton.) Where's the consequence-free French kissing to a Sixpence None the Richer soundtrack of yore?

If you're nostalgic for some silly, Clinton-era fun in your grown-up wine bar life, let's go old school for a minute and make some drinks based on movies from a simpler time. These recipes come from underage revelry as seen in She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Never Been Kissed. They're fun, fruity, and completely unironic. Tasty enough to satisfy your big-girl palette, but fun enough to warm even the most world-weary millennial heart.

Editor's Note: while we of course don't promote teen drinking, we do think it's a great idea to toast our '90's youths now that we have valid ids.
