La Pulperia Opens In New York City's Hell's Kitchen

La Pulperia, a restaurant from Carlos Barroz and Victor Medina, is now open in New York City's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. Named for the general stores found throughout South America, the spot will feature Latin cuisine with Italian and Spanish influences. The menu offers a modern take on the dishes chef Barroz (of Quahog's Seafood Shack in Stone Harbor, N.J.) grew up eating in Argentina, like parrillada, a hearty platter of skirt steak, pork loin, shortribs, chorizo, and blood sausage, served here with fries and a salad.

Appetizers like lobster taquitos with grilled pineapple, Sriracha, avocado cream, and Japanese mayo share space on the menu with signature entrées like Brazilian Paco fish ribs with orange-chipotle barbecue sauce and coconut rice. There's also a raw bar with seating for two, serving everything from oysters and clams on the half-shell to ceviches and dishes like salmon brûlée with brown sugar glaze, cream cheese, and strawberry-ginger leche de tigre. Guests can pair the rustic cuisine with a selection of seasonal cocktails from mixologist Cesar Chavez (of De Santos and Apothéke) as well as wines from Argentina, France, and California.

Designed with the authentic pulperia in mind, the restaurant features floor tiles from Mexico, handcrafted brass lamps, and a ceiling made from reclaimed wood. Eventually, La Pulperia will sell packaged goods just like its namesakes.
