Ixion Jet Concept Forgoes Windows For Floor-To-Ceiling Digital Screens
The Ixion jet concept from design firm Technicon forgoes traditional windows in favor of floor-to-ceiling panorama screens—which isn't really a new idea at all, since Spike Aerospace announced that their supersonic jet would have digital screens earlier in the year. The new concept gives fliers a high-resolution livestream "video" of what's going on outside so they have something to gaze at while flying.
According to Dezeen, the jet will have solar-powered cameras on the wings and fuselage, which will capture the surroundings. Since beautiful vistas aren't always available, whether due to weather conditions or the lack of sunlight, the display can be changed to a different image—including outer space.
"The user experience is greatly enhanced by directly engaging the passengers with the environment outside, to the point of exhilaration by giving an unhindered panoramic view from the inside," says Technicon design director Gareth Davies.
We aren't really sure how we feel about this new trend in aviation, since taking actual windows out would make us feel even more confined than usual, but it's definitely an interesting step. Plus, removing windows apparently lightens the load enough to make the aircraft more energy efficient, which we are always in favor of.
