How To Make A Swoopy Frosted Cake

It's hard to resist a perfectly frosted cake — no matter what is on the inside, if the cake looks beautiful from the outside, it will be impossible for guests to ignore.

Luckily, making one is not as difficult as it looks. Jennifer Aaronson of Martha Stewart Living shows us the steps to a perfect "swoopy" cake finish that is as easy as it is fun! Aaronson believes that this design is particularly irresistible. "I think this is that kind of cake that everyone looks at and thinks this looks so luscious [they] want to dive right in," she says.

It's easy to begin. Start with a crumb coat — a smooth layer of frosting that is then refrigerated — on an already baked and cooled cake. This will lock in the crumbs so that you don't get any in your top coat of frosting. Use glossy frosting and pour a big mound on top. Using an offset spatula, with the cake on a turntable, push the frosting down and create the swooping motion as you smooth out the frosting and let the excess fall down the sides. Add frosting to the sides as well, swoop the sides, and then top with sea salt to finish.

It's a method that must be seen to imitate, so watch the video above to learn how to do it! And if you are inspired to do more, you can head over to Martha Stewart for a full series of cake- and cupcake-related videos.
