This comforting winter weather cocktail tastes like a warm slice of apple pie — that is, if you like your apple pie spiked with mulled wine, dark rum, and Grand Marnier. (I know I do.)
INGREDIENTS
For the apple poaching liquid:
- 1 cup red wine
- 1 ½ cups water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 tablespoon star anise
- 6-8 gala apples, peeled, cored, and quartered
For the cocktail:
- 3 ounces apple poaching liquid
- 1 ½ ounces dark rum
- ¼ ounce Grand Marnier
- Pinch of salt
- Sprig of fresh rosemary, for garnish
- 1 cinnamon stick, for garnish
DIRECTIONS
For the apple poaching liquid:
Add the red wine, water, and sugar to a medium-sized pot over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, then add in the cinnamon stick, star anise, and apple slices. Simmer liquid for an additional 8 minutes, then remove from heat and strain the liquid into a separate container.
For the cocktail:
Combine the poaching liquid, dark rum, Grand Marinier, and salt in a serving glass. Stir with the sprig of fresh rosemary, and garnish with a cinnamon stick.
