Hot Cocoa

A basic recipe for a wintertime favorite from Cindy Bearman of ABC Kitchen. Serve topped with a homemade marshmallow, and a chocolate mint cookie on the side.


  • ½ cup sugar
  • 4 cups heavy cream
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1 pound semi-sweet (60%) chocolate


Combine sugar, heavy cream and milk in a 4-quart saucepan, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Place chocolate in another 4-quart saucepan. Once the milk boils, pour over chocolate. Mix with a handheld immersion blender, and serve warm, topped with marshmallows.

Cocoa Shopping Tip

There are so many varieties of chocolate on the shelves today it can be overwhelming to pick one – as a general rule of thumb, the fewer the ingredients, the better the chocolate.

Cocoa Cooking Tip

When melting chocolate, use a double boiler and stir occasionally to avoid scorching chocolate at the bottom of the bowl.
