While Los Angeles is in its cold spell, the Tasting Kitchen has created its version of the perfect winter cocktail: the hot buttered rum. This wintry cocktail at The Tasting Kitchen is exactly what it sounds like: dark rum, housemade butter batter, apple butter, fresh-pressed ginger, allspice dram, hot water, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and dark brown sugar as a sweetener.

3.1

INGREDIENTS

For the butter batter:

  • 1 stick of unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg

For the drink:

  • 2 bar spoons of butter batter
  • 1 bar spoon of apple butter
  • 2 ounces Appleton rum or dark rum
  • 1/2 ounce fresh-pressed ginger
  • 1/4 ounce allspice dram
  • 4 ounces hot water

DIRECTIONS

For the butter batter:

Ceam all ingredients together with a mixer and a paddle attachment.

For the drink:

Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker and stir until the butter has dissolved. Have a glass or mug with hot water already in it so the glass is warmed up and ready to go. Dump out the hot water in the glass and strain the mixture into the glass or mug removing pulp from the apple butter.

To make into a hot buttered mocktail, use 6 ounces of hot water and no rum.
