Healthier Beers Of The Summer

With bathing suit season in full swing, our society is all about eating and drinking healthy.

Following this trend, USA Today came up with a list of healthy beers. Topping the lis t at 99 calories per serving, Yuengling Light Lager was labeled the healthiest beer, followed gluten-free New Planet 3R Raspberry Ale and Abita Purple Haze. Even dark Guinness Draught weighed in at only 126 calories per serving.

Besides a low calories count, what exactly makes a beer healthy? Natural antioxidants, phenols, are found in wine, apples, oranges, and beer according to some studies. These have been found to reduce the threat of cancer, as well prevent some age-related diseases.

Although the phenols are beneficial to your body, and ales tend to have a higher concentration, moderation is key. If you're downing 4 or 5 beers a day, you will most likely develop negative side effects, such as weight gain, cancelling out any benefits the antioxidants are aiding.

The following beers also made USA Today's list:

Left Hand Good Juju

Sam Adam's Light Lager

New Belgium Blue Paddle

Full Sail Session Lager

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

Butte Creek Organic India Pale Ale
