Greening your kitchen through tools and new habits can be pretty easy; it just might take a little getting used to. If you’re redesigning your kitchen, try to look for eco-friendly equipment especially for dishwashers and ranges. If you’re just trying to improve your kitchen in small ways like using more kitchen towels than paper, check out our list of simple changes that will make a large difference in the long run.
— Use kitchen towels instead of paper ones when possible or, even better, buy towels meant for detailing or cleaning cars, which tend to be cheaper and more durable than normal kitchen towels.
— Try buying products that you eat a lot of in bulk. For example, if you’re a fan of Greek yogurt, try buying it by the quart instead of individual sizes and then bring single servings to work in reusable containers.
— Buy good quality stainless steel or cast-iron cookware because if you invest in a good one it will last much longer than Teflon.
— Eco-friendly or bamboo cutting boards like these.
— Buy a low-flow kitchen faucet to reduce water waste.
— If you’re in the market for a new dishwasher, try to buy one that is energy efficient. If you can’t buy a new one, then try turning the temperature to 120 degrees (if you can), which is still hot enough to sanitize.
— Opt for an electric kettle, they use less heat to boil water than the stovetop.
— Buy countertops made with recycled materials like these.
— Use cork flooring in your kitchen if you’re lucky enough to be able to design your own kitchen.
