Green Giant Launches Line Of Veggie-Friendly Chips

The Jolly Green Giant has long been known for his expansive line of frozen vegetables, but the company has decided to get into the snack food game, and has launched two new packaged chips: multigrain sweet potato chips and Cheddar-flavored roasted vegetable tortilla chips.

The sweet potato chips are actually primarily corn, mixed with sweet potatoes, rice, and brown rice. They're super-crunchy, and actually taste a little like Sun Chips. In our taste test, we found that the salt level was just right, and while they're certainly sweet, they're not too sweet (and only contain 3 grams of sugars per serving). Those looking for a pronounced sweet potato flavor will have to look elsewhere, though; if we didn't know there were sweet potatoes in here we wouldn't have guessed.

The roasted veggie tortilla chips are predominantly comprised of corn as well, along with red and green bell peppers. Other grains and vegetables included in the mix are buckwheat, sorghum, millet, amaranth, onion, quinoa, broccoli, and tomatoes. While the ingredient list might give you an impression that you're about to eat solid V-8, the cheese powder that coats the chips actually makes them taste a whole lot like Doritos. In fact, that was all of our tasters' first reactions. Once you get past the cheese, though, there's an underlying vegetal sweetness that lets you know that there's more here than just corn.

The suggested retail price for both products is $2.99. The sweet potato chips contain 140 calories, 6 grams of fat, and 14 grams of whole grain per 1-ounce serving, and the tortilla chips contain 140 calories, 7 grams of fat, and 17 grams of whole grain per 1-ounce serving.
