FreshDirect Finally Back Up To Speed After Hurricane Sandy

When Hurricane Sandy swept over the Eastern Seaboard in the days before Halloween, it severely affected the infrastructure that allows online grocer FreshDirect to make deliveries to the area. The supply chain was knocked offline, delivery routes were rendered impassable, and dozens of its refrigerated trucks were damaged. After the storm, those trucks were moved to the Harlem River Yard in the Bronx's Port Morris, according to DNAinfo, and temporary trucks were rented with service restorations expected "after Thanksgiving," according to an official.

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and yesterday a promising message went up on FreshDirect's Facebook page: "Fans: Thank you so much for your patience — especially those in Connecticut, the Bronx, Staten Island, and Long Island. We're happy to say that we're now open for delivery everywhere again!"

No word yet on how long it will take to get their official fleet back up and running, but it looks like the rented trucks came through in the clutch (if only a few days late for Thanksgiving deliveries).
