Fine China - Made In America

Lenox Bone China – Made in America

I am very often asked about products that are made in America.  So many manufacturers have moved their production overseas that it is a difficult question to answer.  Of the few that remain, today I wanted to highlight one of the larger ones still manufacturing items in America, Lenox.

When selecting fine china you have a number of choices: earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Among porcelain products you've got basic porcelain, fine china and bone china.

Around the end of the 18th century, an Englishman named Josiah Spode developed a new formula for china that incorporated the use of calcined bone ash. The addition of bone ash in china mixtures continues today at Spode as well as many other china manufacturers including Lenox. Considered by most to be the finest of porcelain products, bone china is stronger and more translucent than the basic porcelain and "fine" varieties.

Lenox fine bone china is one of the only and largest manufacturers of fine china in the United States, produced at their state-of-the art facility in Kinston, North Carolina. Founded in 1889, Lenox has been designing and manufacturing fine bone china in the United States for 123 years.

Lenox is the first North American bone china to be used in the White House. Since 1917, six Presidents and First Ladies have commissioned Lenox to create the official table service for the white House.

It wasn't until the early 20th Century when separate dining rooms and hostess parties became the new trend that Lenox's products became popular. In the 1950's, Lenox offered 5-piece complete place settings, three piece buffet/place settings and individual tableware pieces. Its products were now within reach of the average American family. Lenox sells products under the Lenox, Dansk and Gorham brands.

Made in USA.  Nice.
