10 Foods You Should Put In The Fridge Right Now (Slideshow)

Unopened, a box or can of chicken or beef broth can last for up to a year stored in a cool dark place. However, once you open it, you need to store any leftovers in the fridge right away, or else it will start to go bad. You can leave leftover broths in the fridge for 4 to 5 days after opening.

Applesauce

If you're making your applesauce at home, store it in the fridge and it will be good for a week to ten days. For store-bought canned or jarred varieties, they are strictly refrigerate after opening. Once they are exposed to air, bacteria will begin to grow.

Fresh Pasta

Fresh pasta has eggs in it, and raw eggs can carry dangerous bacteria, like salmonella. You must store your fresh pasta, store bought or homemade, in the refrigerator to protect it from becoming dangerous.

Dijon Mustard

Dijon mustard, unlike its standard yellow counterpart, loses its distinct flavor after opening if left at room temperature. If you want to keep that tangy taste, put your Dijon in the fridge.

Nut Oils

Oils that come from nuts, specifically hazelnut and walnut oil, spoil faster than other oils. They will go rancid quicker than you think if you leave them at room temperature. Refrigerate them to keep this from happening.

Pure Maple Syrup

Maple syrup only needs to be refrigerated if it is 100 percent pure. Breakfast syrups that you get at the grocery store or the diner are actually not made from maple sap at all so you don't need to refrigerate them. But pure maple syrup will grow mold quickly if not refrigerated.

Mayonnaise

Mayo doesn't really go bad if left in your cupboard. But after opening, it will lose its flavor if not refrigerated. And if you are going to eat mayo, you want it to taste as fresh as possible.

Baby Food

Baby foods are very prone to spoiling after opening. For ones that include fish, meat, or eggs, you can keep them in the fridge for one day after opening. Ones that only have vegetables or fruit in them can stay in the fridge for up to two days.

Defrosting Meats

It is very dangerous to leave defrosting meats at room temperature. Doing so leaves a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria. Put your defrosting meats in a sealed container in the fridge to prevent yourself from getting sick.

Leafy Greens

A leafy green can be anything from kale to spinach and they spoil quickly. You have to put them in the fridge if you want them to last longer than a day. For them to last even longer, store them away from fruits like peaches and apples, which emit gasses that cause greens to wilt.
