On The Eleventh Day Of Christmas...

Technically, the Twelve Days of Christmas don't start until Christmas Day, but we're already in the spirit. To celebrate here's the carol, 'The Twelve Days of Christmas' The Daily Meal-style, featuring some New York City dishes enjoyed over the years that we'd be willing to sing about.

Eleven Pipers Piping. Hmm, pipers piping. Pies a-piping? Already have pies. Wait! Where there are pipes there's smoke! Smoked dishes! Eleven tasty smoked things.

On the eleventh day of Christmas, my waiter brought to me clockwise from top: Barney Greengrass' Nova Scotia salmon; L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon's caramelized eel layered with smoked foie gras; Aureole's grilled burger with smoked bacon; Marfa's rack of smoked babyback ribs; Kesté's pomodorini e provola pizza with smoked mozzarella; Anthos' smoked octopus with lemon confit; Lamazou's smoked "Smart Duck" sandwich; Spina's smoked salmon and poached eggs with caviar cream; Sarabeth's Goldie Lox with scrambled eggs; and The Smile's Nova with lemon caper cream cheese.

So the carol thus far would go:

On the eleventh day of Christmas, my waiter brought to me...
Eleven tasty smoked things,
Ten gourds a-heaping,
Nine pies a-twirling,

Eight, made with milk in,
Seven soups worth sipping,
Six eggs for feasting,
Five on-ion rings!

Chicks from four birds,
Three fried French hens,
Two desserts for two,
And Felidia's pear ravioli.
