America’s 10 Best Fast-Food Chains for Breakfast

Within the past handful of years, more and more fast-food chains have jumped on the breakfast wagon for a simple reason: People are up and about in the morning, looking for a quick place to grab breakfast, and the local fast-food spot is an obvious choice. But some fast-food chains rock breakfast better than others, and we're ranking the top 10.

#10 Quiznos

Not all Quiznos locations offer breakfast, but the offerings at the ones that do are perfectly tasty and toasty. The lineup is pretty simple: Biscuits, flatbreads, and toasted subs are filled with egg and cheese or ham, bacon, sausage, or steak, egg, and cheese, and the end result certainly hits the spot.

#9 Sonic

Sonic is one of the only fast-food chains that has Texas toast as a bread option for breakfast sandwiches, which is always good in our book. Their Breakfast Toaster — cheese, eggs, and either bacon, ham, or sausage on toast — is a winner, and we're also fans of their breakfast burritos, CroisSONIC breakfast sandwich (egg, cheese, and bacon or sausage on a croissant), French Toaster sandwiches, chocolate-filled Cinna-snacks, and French toast sticks.

#8 Jack in the Box

Jack In the Box's breakfast menu is pretty extensive and has something for just about every hunger level from just a bit peckish (the Breakfast Jack: ham, egg, and cheese on a bun) to ready-to-eat-a-horse (Jumbo Breakfast Platter: scrambled eggs, hash browns, eight mini pancakes, and sausage or three strips of bacon). Though just about all their offerings are of the egg, cheese, and breakfast meat variety, a stellar array of breads are offered including buns, biscuits, grilled sliced bread, croissants, and flour tortillas. We're also a fan of their "Brunchfast" menu, with offerings like the Southwest Scrambler Plate: scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheese-topped potatoes.

#7 Subway

Hey, don't knock Subway's breakfast until you've tried it. The ability to add eggs (or egg whites) and cheese to any of their flatbreads or sandwiches opens up a world of possibilities with more combinations than just about any other chain. Egg white, spinach, tomato, and mozzarella flatbread is healthy and downright gourmet, and you can also take it in the complete other direction with egg, cheese, bacon, ham, steak, and banana peppers. Want meatballs on that, too? Go for it.

#6 Chick-Fil-A

Chick-Fil-A's breakfast menu only has 15 items but it's definitely a winner. Both their fried chicken and biscuits are of course very solid, and when you put them both together (in sandwich form, in the smaller Chick-n-Minis, or as platter with eggs and cream gravy), it's a match made in heaven. They're also taking strides to be healthier by rolling out breakfast sandwiches with grilled chicken and egg whites, which is certainly commendable.

#5 Burger King

Burger King's breakfast glory is largely derived from its Croissan'wiches, which can be filled with everything from egg and cheese to the diabolical "Fully Loaded," with ham, sausage, bacon, eggs, and cheese. Biscuit sandwiches and French toast sticks are also always welcome, and taking a play from the McDonald's gamebook, they also offer an Ultimate Breakfast Platter with scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage, a biscuit, and pancakes. Those looking to eat healthy have a lone option: maple-flavored Quaker oatmeal.

#4 Hardee’s/Carl’s, Jr.

Hardee's and Carl's, Jr. have hitched their breakfast wagons to the power of the almighty biscuit, which they offer with sausage, bacon (or both), egg, and cheese, or topped with gravy. Breakfast sandwiches served on sourdough toast are also perfectly tasty, as are breakfast burritos (the Big Country, with egg, sausage, ham, hash browns, cheese, and cream sausage gravy, is a beast), but this chain also offers what might be the most behemoth breakfast offering in the industry: the Breakfast Burger, essentially a bacon cheeseburger with eggs and hash browns.

#3 Dunkin’ Donuts

Whereas most fast food chains have figured out ways to tack on breakfast to their core menu in recent years, Dunkin' Donuts has been focused on breakfast since day one. Along with the usual baked goods like doughnuts, bagels, muffins, biscuits, and croissants, they've also really stepped up their breakfast sandwich game with instant classics like the Big n' Toasted (bacon, egg, and cheese on Texas toast) and fun, limited-time offerings like maple sugar-glazed bacon. they're also the only fast food chain on the list to offer bagels with cream cheese! Their DD Smarter selections, including a veggie egg white omelette on multigrain flatbread, also give those watching their waistlines good options.

#2 Taco Bell

Taco Bell took a completely different approach to breakfast when they introduced it in 2014, as you might have noticed, with offerings including waffle tacos and loaded breakfast CrunchWraps. The waffle tacos (and their follow-up, biscuit tacos) have fallen by the wayside, and today the menu is dominated by breakfast burritos, breakfast tacos, and those CrunchWraps. But Taco Bell excels in letting its customers customize their breakfast more than any other chain; for example, you can have any combination of steak, egg, cheese, pico de gallo, nacho cheese sauce, sour cream, and potatoes in your Grande Scrambler wrap, and add in guacamole, jalapeño sauce, three-cheese blend, or bacon for an extra charge. They're also constantly innovating; their newest breakfast item, the Naked Egg Taco, replaces the taco shell with a fried egg. And that breakfast CrunchWrap, with bacon, egg, cheese, a hash brown, and creamy jalapeño sauce, just might be the tastiest breakfast item on the market right now.

#1 McDonald’s

The original king of fast-food breakfasts, McDonald's is still sitting on the throne. There are several reasons Mickey D's (does anyone still call it that?) is at the top of the heap: One, it's offered all day long, one of the smartest decisions the company has ever made. Two, the Egg McMuffin is the perfect, OG fast-food breakfast. Three, they offer egg whites and fresh eggs upon request. Four, the McGriddle is the perfect breakfast sandwich bread. Add to that tasty biscuit sandwiches; the absolutely massive Big Breakfast with Hotcakes; and healthier options like Fruit 'N Yogurt Parfait, Egg White Delight, and fruit & maple oatmeal, and it's easy to see why McDonald's comes out on top in the breakfast department.
