Double Cheeseburgers & Hot Chicken

Siblings. Whatever one gets, the other wants to have the same thing. It’s true of children and of burger chains. So it’s not surprising that Hardee’s finally has gotten the same double cheeseburger that fellow CKR Restaurants unit Carl’s Jr. introduced in May. Hardee’s calls its version simply the Classic Double Cheeseburger. Carl’s Jr.’s name was the California Classic Double Cheeseburger.

But they’re the same burger: two beef patties, two slices of American cheese, grilled onions, Thousand Island dressing, lettuce and tomato on a seeded bun. Same price: $2.49 alone; $4.99 in a combo.

But as summer nears its close, there are several other new cheeseburgers on menus worth noting. One is the Triple Cheeseburger that McDonald’s has used as a regional LTO for years. But now the Triple has joined (for a limited time) the national Pick 2 for $5 discount menu at McDonald’s.

Steak ‘n Shake has introduced a sloppy-looking double cheeseburger it calls the Cheddar Cheesy. That’s the chain’s Double Steakburger with extra melted Wisconsin Cheddar, shredded lettuce, diced tomato, diced onion and mustard. Jalapeňos can be added on request.

Smaller chains also are bringing out new double cheeseburgers. Austin, Texas-based Hopdoddy Burger Bar, now grown to 16 locations, has introduced the Lil Brat Burger as an LTO. That’s a beef patty topped with a braised brat, roasted red bell peppers, caramelized onion, provolone cheese, tomato red leaf lettuce and sweet grain mustard on a poppy seed egg bun.

Burger joints have become chicken specialists, too, of course, so when KFC made Nashville Hot Chicken a national event back in January, it was a certainty that it would come to burger restaurants.

Starting today (Sept. 1) Washington, D.C.-based burger chain Good Stuff Eatery is adding a Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich to its menu. The build is a fried chicken breast sandwich with bread-and-butter pickles and a drizzle of spicy pepper oil on a brioche bun ($7.65). The new item will be available at its Capitol Hill and Georgetown stores in Washington, D.C., and in Arlington, Va.

Good Stuff Eatery also has a new meatless burger. The $7.65 Fried Green Tomato Veg is topped with a fried green tomato, red tomato, sliced avocado, Dreamfarm goat cheese, arugula, cilantro and smoky chipotle mayo on a Pennsylvania Dutch bun.

But 8 Oz. Burger & Co. in Seattle is taking Nashville chicken even hotter. Its Szechuan Hot Chicken (below) starts with Nashville-style fried chicken but adds Szechuan peppers, Chinese pickled mustard greens, habanero-Jack cheese, cilantro and Szechuan peppercorn aïoli.
