Weidmann's: Southern Cuisine & Peanut Butter Crocks

Weidmann's is well-known as a go-to classic Southern restaurant. Located in Meridian, Mississippi within walking distance of the annual Jimmy Rodgers Music Festival, it is a local favorite and foodie-tourist destination.

Weidmann's — established in 1870 by Swiss immigrant and chef Felix Weidmann — was first located in the historic Union Hotel. It moved to its present location in the 1920's.

Old restaurants like Weidmann's usually have traditions that are unique to them, and this spot is no exception. The restaurant boasts an enormous collection of photographs of past guests, many of whom are celebrities. A more unique tradition, however, is the peanut butter and crackers present on every table.

Displayed on each table are beautiful artisan handmade pottery crocks chock-full of peanut butter, accompanied by a variety of crackers.

The story goes like this: After WWII there was a shortage of butter. Someone had the idea that peanut butter would work just fine as a substitute, and a tradition was born. These days the crocks are made by a local potter in Meridian, Mississippi, and guests can purchase their own. For collectors of vintage items, antique Weidmann's crocks can be found occasionally on eBay.

Weidmann's offers lunch, dinner, and a weekend brunch menu with classic Southern staples such as crab cakes and fried green tomatoes, as well as an extensive dessert menu. The restaurant has been around for more than 100 years, and most likely will offer its regulars and destination-eaters a delightfully unique culinary experience well through another century.
