‘Colossal Burger’ Continues Menu Growth

Earlier this week, BurgerBusiness.com exclusively reported on Outback Steakhouse’s new $11.99 Grass-Fed Burger as continued proof that casual dining is coming back to burgers as the category’s customer traffic softens. The trend continues still. Casual-dining chain Ruby Tuesday has brought back an even bigger version of its Colossal Burger, and the name fits. The build is two half-pound burger patties tucked into a three-piece Big Mac-style brioche bun with Cheddar and Swiss cheeses. It’s priced at $12.99 (though that will vary).

Menu development usually slows during the holidays, with the exception of horrid pumpkin-flavored things. This year is being a bit of an exception with several interesting introductions in addition to the burgers mentioned above. A few examples of what has been brought out:

Hardee’s new Bacon Swiss Chicken Biscuit is an example of the menu price inflation happening across all restaurants. This buttermilk chicken breast fillet, topped with applewood-smoked bacon, Swiss cheese and a folded egg on a from scratch-biscuit is priced at $3.99. A combo with hash browns and drink is $5.69. Consider that the Grilled Cheese Breakfast Sandwich Hardee’s and sibling Carl’s Jr. introduced in January was priced at $2.99, with a combo to be had for $4.69.

Jhnny Rockets Philly Cheesesteak Loaded Street FriesJohnny Rockets shows that the side-dish-as-entrée trend continues. Its new holiday menu includes Philly Cheesesteak Loaded Street Fries, which are a full plate of its fries topped with grilled thinly sliced sirloin steak, melted provolone cheese, grilled mushrooms, caramelized onion, grilled green pepper and warm Cheddar cheese sauce. This new limited time menu item is a plateful of yum that is bound to be a fan favorite and a great-for-sharing crowd pleaser. These compliment a new Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich and a Chipotle Chicken Sandwich (a chicken breast topped with caramelized onion, melted pepper-Jack cheese, house-made chipotle ranch sauce, thick applewood smoked bacon, lettuce and tomato on a wheat bun).

In New Zealand, Burger King has added a festive Chicken Cranberry Tendercrisp. And in Germany it has introduced the Claus Burger (with hearty Edam and Maasdam cheese and barbecue sauce) plus the Santa Cordon Bleu (chicken breast with turkey ham an cheese inside).

White Castle Turkey SlidersWhite Castle has new Turkey Sliders in three varieties: Cranberry Turkey, Bistro Turkey (with “tangy bistro sauce”) and Turkey Dinner (topped with sweet-potato waffle fries and cranberry sauce).

Dunkin’ Donuts has added Sweet Black Pepper Bacon croissant sandwich and, joining the Cronut fad a wee bit late, a Croissant Donut of its own.

Of course, it isn’t just the chains that are dressing up food options. Chomp Kitchen & Drink in Warren, R.I., has a new menu that includes two new burgers worth trying: a Chipotle Burger (beef patty, smoked green-chili salsa verde, chipotle aïoli, griddled cojita cheese, lettuce, tomato) and a Truffle Burger (beef patty, toasted foraged local mushrooms, black truffle cream sauce, truffle butter, crispy matchstick potatoes).

Burgatory in Cincinnati has a new mammoth Thanksgiving Burger. The build is a garlic-crusted turkey patty with farmhouse Cheddar, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn gravy & cranberry jam on brioche. Texas chain Hopdoddy Burger Bar has a Thanksgiving Burger, too. Here’s how it makes it: A sage turkey patty with Gouda cheese, jalapeňo cornbread stuffing, cranberry relish, tomato, brussels sprout salad, may and an egg bun. Phew.
