Chipotle’s Double-Secret Menu Item
Today on The Daily Meal
Recipe of the day
There’s a secret lurking inside every outpost of Chipotle.
It’s not on the menu, but if you ask for it, they’ll know exactly what to do. Its name? The quesadilla. Instead of rolling up the tortilla into a burrito, it can be filled with meat and (lots of) cheese, and will be folded in half, wrapped in foil, and pressed until the cheese is melted. But then what to do? A quesadilla of this size (they’re made with the same burrito-sized tortillas) can be a little bit unwieldy. But the Chipotle employees know what to do, and will if you ask nicely: roll the whole shebang up into a neat little package. Or, if you prefer, they can open the quesadilla back up first and add in any extra fillings you'd like.
The end result looks a lot like a burrito. But it’s not. It’s the Quesarito, and it’s technically a double secret Chipotle menu item.
When you think about it, the Quesarito actually makes a lot of sense, and fits right in with Chipotle’s business plan. If you ask for something, they’ll do it. Just want one taco that only has beans in it for your picky kid? They’ll do it. Want them to go get some fresh cilantro to add to your burrito? They’ll do it (make sure you leave a tip). Want three times more barbacoa than they usually add? They’ll do it. You’ve got tortillas in two sizes and a whole smorgasbord of fillings to work with, and at Chipotle, the menu is more of a guide than a definitive list of offerings.
While it might not be in your best interest to get too creative during the lunchtime rush, if you ask nicely they’ll be more than happy to oblige. And make sure you sneak a peek at the person in line behind you after you receive your order. The look on their face will be priceless.
