Move Over, Pizza Rat, Chicago Has A Pizza Squirrel

The New York vs. Chicago pizza war has been long and hard-fought, and a true winner may never be officially decided. But this week a new challenger appeared to take on New York's famed Pizza Rat, and Chicago's new champion is Pizza Squirrel.

According to DNAinfo, Chicagoan Andrew Goodman spotted the furry pizza-lover hopping around in Chicago's Ukranian Village. At first he thought the squirrel was just lugging around a piece of cardboard, but once the creature hopped up a tree and settled in for a nice snack, Goodman realized the squirrel was actually hauling a slice of pepperoni pizza.

"It was exactly like the pizza rat, except he was hopping," Goodman said.

Goodman's friend Melissa McEwan posted the photo to Twitter, and people have been going crazy for it.

The picture has so far been retweeted more than 600 times, though it did not escape notice that Pizza Squirrel appeared to be eating a New York-style slice of thin-crust pepperoni pizza. Possibly a slice of Chicago-style deep-dish pizza would be too heavy for any squirrel to carry up a tree, even a squirrel as burly and well-fed as Pizza Squirrel.

The pizza wars may never end, but there's no question that when it comes to pizza rodents, Chicago's is much cuter.
