Homemade candied orange peels are easy to make and so much better than store-bought. Serve them as a garnish on ice cream or chocolate mousse, or have a couple as a snack with afternoon tea.
- 2 oranges
- 2 cups sugar, preferably organic cane sugar, plus extra for coating
- 1 cup water
Using a vegetable peeler, peel the skin off of the oranges. In a small pot, add your orange peel and fill with cold water. Bring to a boil, drain, and repeat about 3 times or until most of the bitterness is gone from the peel. On the last round, rinse the orange peel with cold water so they stop cooking.
In the same pot, whisk your 2 cups of sugar with the 1 cup of water. Bring to a simmer and let cook for about 8 minutes, or until it becomes clear and the sugar has dissolved. Add your orange peels and gently simmer until they become translucent, approximately 5 minutes. Remove the peels from the cooking liquid with tongs and dry for about 10 minutes on either parchment paper or a wire rack.
Take a bowl of sugar and toss in your orange peels one at a time until completely coated.
Let the orange peels dry for as long as possible. The longer they stay out to dry, the crispier they will get.
