Oreo-Stuffed Croissant Takes On The Cronut

Is Canada's "Crookie" the new Cronut? Probably not. But with Dominique Ansel's famous croissant/donut hybrid still generating hours-long lines even on national holidays, it's no wonder that so many people are trying to duplicate its success.

At Toronto's Clafouti Patisserie and Café, the newest challenger is the Crookie, which is basically a croissant with a whole bunch of Oreo cookies baked inside.

"When you bite in, it's creamy and sweet, with the cream wrapping itself in the croissant dough and a crunchiness from the Oreo bits," said owner Olivier Jansen-Reynaud.

Jansen-Reynaud said Oreos became his favorite cookie many years ago when he moved from France to Canada, so when tasked with creating a chimera of beloved pastries, he decided that the Oreo must be one of them.

It was apparently a challenge to get the Oreos to stay inside the croissant dough, though. Jansen-Reynaud said it took several tries before he could get the melty Oreo filling to stop oozing out of the flaky croissant pastry. In the end, the croissant was stuffed with crushed Double-Stuffed Oreos and icing, to help them stick.

According to The Daily Mail, the Crookie hasn't come near the Cronut's level of cultural domination yet, but it's doing pretty well in its own right. Jansen-Reynaud says customers have been ordering them by the box, and he plans on increasing production to keep up with the customers.
