Brad Pitt's "Fury" Knows No Bounds

Brad Pitt's new film "Fury" is about an American tank crew prowling the blood-spattered ground deep in German in the waning days of World War II. It is an honestly explicated depiction of war in that era and the human tolls undergone by soldiers in both uniforms.

Brad Pitt plays a character named "Wardaddy." He's a grizzled, go-to-hell commander of a Sherman tank that has been ravaged during the fighting. It is April, 1945.

Pitt's character commands a group of veteran soldiers and one fresh recruit just out of 8 weeks of basic training. They are played by Michael Pena and Shia LaBeouf, with Logan Lerman as the newbie who is literally afraid to kill anyone.

The new recruit gets some very personal tutoring by Wardaddy on the finer points of killing a captured German soldier by shooting him the back.

They are some mandatory wartime script clichés and devices, including a momentary love angle when Wardaddy and the newbie bed down a couple of very frightened women they "liberate" when the troops take over a small German village.

"Fury" is not exactly the kind of war film a majority of filmgoers are used to seeing. There are no heroes, or even a happy ending. The whole saga is depicted mostly through the barrels of a tank and the tracers and bombs of the Germans. There are many corpses and an incinerated landscape from start to finish. Evidently there was never a sunny day in this part of Germany during the war. You may find this film's approach to be simplified yet intense. The digital special effects are impressive. The movie's script somewhat less than that. Brad Pitt seems to be on a mission, both as an actor and as his character in "Fury." War is hell seems to be the message. We got that from Audie Murphy along time ago.
