I started off with my family's favorite recipe for homemade spaghetti sauce, which is very good but a bit mild for my preference. So I kept adding certain ingredients until I was satisfied, and I ended up with the recipe posted here. I have added red pepper flakes on occasion too, but that makes the sauce a bit spicy and "over the top" for my kids.

Over the years, I watched my grandmother and my mother make homemade spaghetti sauce. I tweaked the recipe a little bit to give it my own taste, but it still reminds me of home. This is a great comfort food. It doesn't have chunks in it so the kids will love it. This recipe makes a lot, but it is easy to halve it to make a smaller pot.

You can replace the sausage (by any other type of sausage) or the ground beef (by ground lamb - for instance) or do it only with one of the two. The zucchini can be replaced by any other vegetable, the cherry tomatoes can be replaced by any other type of tomato as well (I just happened to have them on hand when I invented this concoction). I can assure you it IS delicious!

This is a recipe that I came up with by tweaking ones that I have read and my Mom's recipe. Since I don't actually have my Mom's recipe, it died with her, because she never wrote it down! I, on the other hand, have been writing them down and passing them on to family, friends and Recipezaar. Hopefully, one recipe will be great, family loves it, and it keeps on going because everyone loves it!! This recipe is totally from scratch and can be canned. I cook this in a big turkey roaster so it can simmer for hours. The whole house smells wonderful while its cooking!! Enjoy!!

My kids (and myself) prefer this spaghetti sauce to anything store-bought. While the cooking process is long, the result is worth the wait! Your kitchen will smell wonderful for an entire morning or afternoon! I usually quadruple the recipe and freeze the excess. If you prefer meat sauce, you can brown 1 pound of ground beef and 1 large onion sliced thin, add 1 tsp. salt and sprinkle of parsley, then add to the sauce while cooking.
