Beacon Food Forest In Seattle Will Celebrate Plaza Opening

The new Gathering Plaza for the Beacon Food Forest will open Thursday, June 13. As reported by fitness.broadwayworld.com, the community is invited to enjoy food and music and honor those who helped create the structure.

The construction was made possible thanks to volunteers, students, and two instructors from the University of Washington's Neighborhood Design/Build Studio. The City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Matching Fund Large Project Grant Award helped finance the project.

A food forest is a gardening technique and land management system that is based on woodland ecosystems. It incorporates fruit, nut trees, herbs, vines, vegetables, and more. Some plants provide nutrients to the soil while others act as natural pest controllers. The combination of the plants produce high levels of food production with low maintenance.

The Gathering Plaza will serve as the welcoming point the Beacon Food Forest as well as a place for celebrations, harvesting activities, and planting preparations. The goal is to preserve and enhance Seattle's neighborhoods, as well as encourage civic participation and community involvement.

The installation of the Gathering Plaza will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 at the Beacon Food Forest in Jefferson Park at the corner of 15th Aveune South and South Dakota Street in Seattle.
