Babbel Offers Mobile Wine And Food Course

Travelers and gourmets can learn culinary lingo with Babbel's new Wine, Food, and Gastronomy course. Offered in seven languages, the food- and wine-themed course is available online and as an app for smartphones and tablets.

The app's goal is to help travelers decipher food terms like tire-bouchon (corkscrew in French) and yerbabuena (mint in Spanish) when eating out or traveling. Each of the nine wine, cooking, and spice lessons has speaking, reading, writing, and listening exercises.

Each lesson is separated into three categories — wine, gastronomy/cooking, and herbs and spices — and features illustrated example sentences in the form of kitchen conversations. Users not only learn the words and phrases to describe wine in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, and German, but they also practice pronunciation through the use of a speech recognition software.

The Berlin-based language company also has language lessons for restaurants and beverages. The program for use online and mobile app is $8.95 per month for a three-month subscription.
