With Thanksgiving over and more holidays just around the corner, many are planning trips across state lines to spend quality time with their families and loved ones. Though holiday road trips are often long and tedious, the plethora of culinary creations at pit stops is incentive enough for any sensible food lover to hit the highway. Andrew Zimmern, host of Bizarre Foods, shared his favorite pit stop foods with The Daily Meal.
With drive-thrus, food courts, and gas stations, travelers have an overwhelming number of options for premium snack-time indulgence. Zimmern, who has traveled extensively, shares the top five foods he considers staples for a roadside repast.
Don't worry — you won't find cockroaches, spiders, or roadkill on this list. What Zimmern craves most when he's on the road are all-American greats like pizza and hamburgers. Though his selections may not be the most nutritious, Zimmern makes it clear that certain highway foods are tasty enough to combat any calorie-counting guilty consciences.
"It's so bad for you, but it's a real guilty pleasure," said Zimmern of ubiquitous gas station and truck stop snack staples like hot dogs and fried chicken.
