720,000 Gallons Of Maple Syrup Recovered, Waffles Saved From Extinction

Remember when our maple syrup future was severely threatened by some idiot that stole $30 million of the sweet stuff from Canada's secret maple syrup reserve? Well, it's all been recovered.

The Montreal Gazette reports that police have seized 720,000 gallons of maple syrup from a processing and exporting facility; the owners, S.K. Exports, claim they bought the maple syrup legally.

News broke of the original maple syrup theft in late August, as officials discovered that 16,000 barrels worth of maple syrup were siphoned off from a facility in Quebec. The syrup was from a reserve of maple syrup kept by the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, which uses the reserve to ensure that the industry can keep up supply.

This year, a historically warm winter cut U.S. maple syrup by some 40 percent; maple syrup makers noted that the industry "had quite a lot of off-flavored syrup. I don't think you'd want to put it on a pancake."

Quebec reportedly produces 71 percent of the world's maple syrup, so combined with the bad weather and the drought, Amercians were definitely planning to rely on Canada for our waffle-y goodness. Recovering the $30 million of maple syrup just means we can go back to worrying about Katy Perry's questionable lyrics, instead of what we'll put on our Eggos.
