7UP Antioxidant Taken Off The Market

Soda that's good for you? We knew it was too good to be true.

Dr. Pepper Snapple Group recently announced its decision to remove 7UP Antioxidant from shelves, after taking hits from an advocacy group for making misleading claims about the beverage. The decision came on Thursday after the group filed a lawsuit against the beverage company, which alleged the labeling impled the antioxidants came from natural fruit juice, rather than the added vitamin E the company actually used. "It's an implied claim of healthfulness without any evidence," said Mike Jacobson, the executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

7UP Antioxidant is currently available in three flavors: Cherry Antioxidant, Mixed Berry Antioxidant, and Pomegranate Antioxidant. The line of seemingly nutritious sodas, which were launched in 2009, features photos on their labels of fresh fruit, despite the lack of fruit or juice within the drinks.

Still, the beverage company insists its decision to remove the product does not spring from the lawsuit, but rather a desire to be consistent across the brand. They also continue to stand by the 7UP labeling, which does not claim that it contains juice or fruit.

It seems like we'll have to get our nutritional boost elsewhere.
