5 Ways To Help Restaurants 6 Months After Hurricane Sandy

More than six months after Hurricane Sandy, it's safe to say that most of Manhattan is back to normal. But further afar (like in Brooklyn and much of the Eastern Seaboard), there are plenty of restaurants, farms, and bars that are still struggling toward reopenings.

Sure, the Nathan's Famous hot dogs on the Boardwalk is back in business, but the flagship on Surf and Stillwell is shuttered until Memorial Day Weekend. And while Totonno's Pizzeria celebrated a reopening just a couple of weeks ago, plenty of restaurants in Red Hook, Staten Island, and the Rockaways are still sweeping away the last vestiges of Sandy.

Staten Island's Marina Café and Howard Beach's Cross Bay Diner are awaiting spring openings, while DiSara's phone line has yet to be reconnected. Red Hook Lobster Pound reopened to greet Mayor Michael Bloomberg, but New York's oldest bar, Bridge Café is still soliciting for donations online and hopes to open in May or June. And in the Battery, Battery Urban Farm is just getting the pieces together for spring programming.

So while many renovations are underway, and reopenings are planned and scheduled, there are still a few organizations out there in need of volunteers, donations, and some love. Click here to see five ways you can help (in addition to donating to the Red Cross and the Food Bank for New York City). It could be just as easy as attending a concert, eating some food, or clicking a few buttons on a Kickstarter campaign.
