If your idea of cooking is, "Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix well," then you'll like the recipes from this week's contest. Our theme this week was watermelon, the juicy, sweet fruit that, in the middle of a heat wave (particularly a humid one), seems to be "invented" expressly for such a sticky situation.
Plus, a summer barbecue just wouldn't be a barbecue without a huge hunk of watermelon in the middle of the table or a watermelon salad of some sort to pass around. And if that sounds like exactly what you're looking for, then you'll definitely want to try this week's winning recipe by Dan Myers, Watermelon Salad with Mint and Queso Fresco. It's refreshing, delicious, and has a good mix of flavors — tricky to achieve with watermelon salad because sometimes, it just ends up tasting too sweet (and becomes too filling).
All of the recipes featured here can be made at home for about $17 or less, excluding the cost of small amounts of basic ingredients such as butter, oil, flour, sugar, salt, pepper, and other dried herbs and spices.
