I'm from LA and completely disagree with the article about Pinks. This columnist just looks desperate to have something to write about. Pinks has the best chili dogs anywhere. Sure the lines suck, but it's worth it. And trust me, it's just not for the tourists!
I won't challenge your love of Pink's chilli dogs, but I would passionately assert that the Varsity in Atlanta, on Spring Street beats all chilli dogs anywhere in the world! Stand in queue and place your order in the appropriate vernacular " Spot me an all-the-way-dog, glorified, rings, a naked steak, and a PC!" and you're on your way! Enjoy a chilli dog with fresh sweet Vidalia onions from southern Georgia, Fried onion rings made with the same magnificent onions, a plain hamburger - similar to McDonalds, but with nothing on it and the famous PC a chocolate milk served with heapings of shaved ice....and for those who have the gall bladder who can endure, top it all off with the original Peach Pie, only they way the Varsity can do! Nothing better!
Family owned since 1939, Pink’s Hot Dogs is a Los Angeles institution that has kept the same location and original recipe since its inception. What started as a hot dog stand on a pushcart near the corner of Melrose and La Brea turned into a small restaurant that has been churning out chili dogs for 71 years. Despite its legendary Hollywood status, the epic lines are usually filled with more tourists than locals. Sure, they may cost only $3.30, but considering the battle to find parking and the lackluster taste of the dogs — $3.30 doesn’t seem like that great of a deal after all.
